THE ART OF WOOD ROASTING
A TIME-HONOURED TRADITION
At The Curator, we follow the rare and time-honoured method of wood roasting coffee. This traditional approach uses the gentle, moisture-rich heat of sustainably sourced wood to unlock the fullest potential of each coffee bean. The slower roasting process preserves the beans’ natural oils, enhancing their inherent sweetness, reducing acidity, and delivering a rich, velvety finish in every cup.
We’re proud to be one of the only roasters in the UK honouring this heritage-driven method, inspired by the Northern Italian tradition of crafting exceptional coffee.
A SLOWER APPROACH
The unique properties of wood roasting lie in its ability to deliver gentle, moisture-rich heat that allows for a slower, more controlled roast. This extra time lets the beans develop their full flavour potential, producing:
A smoother taste, free of the sharp acidity often associated with faster roasting methods.
Enhanced natural sweetness from the caramelisation of sugars.
A velvety finish that preserves the bean’s character and oils.
This delicate balance of heat, time, and tradition is what makes The Curator coffee truly unique—perfect for those who appreciate a deeper, richer coffee experience.
SUSTAINABILITY FIRST
We source all the wood for our roasting from Coastal Garden Services—trusted friends of ours who specialise in tree care and responsible forestry No trees are felled purely for firewood; instead, the timber comes from necessary tree work—whether due to storm damage, safety concerns, or natural life cycles.
Once cut, the wood is stacked and air-dried for two years in a careful, time-honoured process that ensures low moisture content without the need for forced kiln-drying. This slow seasoning reduces the carbon footprint of the logs while maintaining their natural integrity, making them ideal for our roasting.
This approach aligns with our philosophy: using what is already available, working with skilled artisans, and keeping traditional methods alive.
